GVU Lab News - April 2000
Announcements
- GVU/CCB lab renovation plans online: we're set to move forward on the
renovation. Take a look at the new layout.
- Lab downtime: because of the upcoming renovation the GVU/CCB lab will
be down for approximately 4-6 weeks beginning around April 24th. The Systems
folks have very graciously allowed us to move temporarily into room 201
during the renovation. The video and usability labs will also be down for
some unknown time period as well - details to come as they are hashed out.
- Upgrade of the GVU/CCB conference room: I'd like to solicit some
opinions on plans for the conference room.
Ideally we'd have a ceiling-mounted projector, the video/keyboard/mouse
switcher, a VCR, and speakers for audio. You could hook either a laptop or
any of the lab machines to the projector. Any other ideas/needs? I really
need input and a push from you to make this happen!
New hardware in the lab:
- Speedy, the SciVis Octane, is now a dual 300 MHz R12K box - formerly it
was a single 250 MHz R10K. Remember! Speedy belongs to SciVis, so
their users and users engaged in high-end graphics and visualization work
have priority.
New software in the lab:
- We have licenses of 3D Studio
Viz, an architectural visualization
product. If you're interested in using it (runs on NT) please let the
me know.
- New games! We now have Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear and
Homeworld.
- Much thanks to Microsoft for donating documentation to their Visual C++
6.0 package, InterDev 6.0, and Visual J++ 6.0. Swing by room 210 CCB
if you'd like to check out a copy.
