Faculty Positions in HCI

October 9, 1997

CoC Building Georgia Tech's Graphics, Visualization & Usability (GVU) Center invites applications for tenure track faculty positions at any level in the College of Computing with possibilities for joint appointments with other campus units. GVU is the leading interdisciplinary center focused on inventing the principles and the computing technologies that will improve the various aspects of professional, scholastic, and private activities.

We are interested in senior candidates with an outstanding reputation and in junior candidates with an exceptional career potential in areas that will strengthen or complement our research efforts in all aspects of Human-Computer Interaction, Visual and Audio interfaces, Multimedia Communication, and Ubiquitous and Multimodal Computing. Current GVU projects include: synthesis of realistic animations, bio-medical imaging, GIS, industrial and engineering visualization, multi-resolution techniques for interacting with highly complex 3D datasets, image-based graphics and modeling techniques, software visualization, usability testing, GUI development tools, virtual environments, smart interfaces, voice and gesture recognition, ubiquitous and mobile computing, new input devices and interaction paradigms, CSCW tools, collaborative CAD, shared virtual worlds, information design, audio interfaces, hyper- and multimedia design, educational applications of new media and the WWW, the culture and literature of new media, and digitally-mediated performance.

GVU involves 50 faculty members and more than 100 PhD and Master students from Computing; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Architecture; Psychology; Literature, Communication, and Culture; Industrial and Systems Engineering; and several other campus units. In addition to faculty research grants, GVU is funded by the state of Georgia, the College of Computing, 12 Industrial Affiliates, and an NSF traineeship. Our facilities include a classroom with LiveBoard and state of the art digital video/audio capture equipment, a video production lab, a usability lab, a scientific visualization lab, and several educational and research labs equipped with more than 100 Intel, HP, SGI, IBM, and Sun workstations equipped with top-of-the-line 3D graphics adapters (including two SGI Infinite Reality) and a Virtual Workbench.

GVU is ranked first in the nation for its graduate program in Graphics: User Interaction (U.S. News & World Report, March 1996) and inaugurates in 1997 a new MS program in HCI. GVU will host the VRAIS'98 and the Interactive 3D Graphics'99 conferences.

The College of Computing is ranked among the top computer science programs of American educational institutions, and includes 45 tenure track faculty, 800 undergraduates, 120 Master's students, and 140 Ph.D. students. The college houses leading groups in most areas of theoretical and applied computing.

For more information, please contact Jarek Rossignac, GVU Director (jarek@cc.gatech.edu).

To apply, please send your resume, a short research statement, copies of three (3) significant papers or reports, and names and titles of at least three (3) references to:
