DAVE DEITRICH

Macintosh Networking Specialist
Motorola Cellular Infrastructure Group
Information Technology Services

GENERAL INFO:

Dave Deitrich is a progamming analyst who works for Motorola in Arlington Heights, Illinois (a northern suburb of Chicago). He earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Summer of 1993, and recently received his master's degree from the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. While at Georgia Tech Dave was VERY involved with the Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Center, a special interdisciplinary lab on campus. Dave received his Masters degree on June 10, 1995.

PAST EMPLOYMENT:

While studying at the University of Illinois Dave worked for the Computing and Communications Service Department as manager of the CCSO Oregon Street Computing Site, a public-access computer lab. At Georgia Tech, Dave worked for a year and a half as the graduate assistant to Randy Carpenter, Lab Manager for the GVU Center. He greatly enjoys working as a systems administrator and support technician, especially if his duties involve graphics or the world wide web.

PAST RESEARCH:

Dave worked on several different research projects while at Georgia Tech. He was a member of the

Dave briefly worked on the Virtual GIS project, which is managed by Bill Ribarsky, Nick Faust (GTRI), and Larry Hodges, and is supported by the U.S. Army. The goal of the Virtual GIS project is to integrate geographic information applications and virtual environments in order to develop a high-quality imaging tool for use in simulations. He decided to resign from the project in order to become the Lab GRA for the GVU lab.

VRoids! A Virtual Environments Video Game

VRoids! was written by Dave Deitrich and Dave Rodriguez for the Spring 1955 CS 8113H Virtual Environments special topic course. To their knowledge, it is the first video game written using the Simple Virtual Environments (SVE) toolkit written at the GVU Center. VRoids! was written in C on SGI reality engine workstations and uses SVE version 1.5 along with custom-designed routines. The game is playable on both 2D and 3D display screens, and is primarily designed to be played using a head-mounted display and the FlightStick 3D pointer (also developed at the GVU center).

The object of VRoids! is fairly simple. You must navigate through an asteroid field in space from one end to the other, while shooting targets along the way to earn points. You can also shoot any asteroids that get close to you in order to avoid hitting them. Bonus points are awarded for flying through the field in better-than-average time, but be warned; if you are hit by an asteroid your score (and your life) are forefited.

The GVU WWW-based Lab Scheduler

Dave's crowning achievement while working at Georgia Tech was the design of a completely web-based lab scheduler for reserving machines for research projects. Fully interactive, the web scheduler would check the person's identity from the /etc/passwd file and then modify data files contained on the web server. Then scripts that ran every hour would take the data files and modify the motd files for each machine to indicate when the computers were reserved. Unfortunately, due to security concerns the GVU Lab Scheduler is only available for local access by College of Computing machines. The lab scheduler was written in C and html.

Redesigned ATM Interface

For a Human-Computer Interaction course, Dave and a few of his classmates redesigned the interface to a Automatic Teller Machine. The complete class project is available in HTML format, including prototypes. Dave's group got a B grade on the assignment.

JOB SKILLS:

Dave is perfectly happy with working for Motorola for right now, but he does have his RESUME on line if you're interested. It is available in either TEXT or POSTSCRIPT form.

HOBBIES AND INTERESTS:

When Dave isn't writing about himself in the third person, he enjoys doing some of the following activities.
