Some musical selections

DQE
DQE (Dairy Queen Empire in alternate worlds without lawsuits) consists of Grace Braun--voice & guitar and Dugan Trodglen--drums. This song, "Jehosephat," is from But Me, I Fell Down, and features Christopher Verene on drums, instead of Mr. Trodglen. Mr. Verene was in the band from its inception until last year, when he left to persue his photography. Hopefully some of that will be here eventually. Anyhow, Grace and Dugan are married and have one iguana. Grace says that this song isn't very representative of their current work, but it's one of my favorites.
Daniel Johnston
Daniel Johnston is the twisted shape of pop music in a world which consistently escapes our grasp. I like to think he is what the blues should sound like when heard over the schizophrenic post-nuclear lo-fi mediascape of the late 1900s. Two of Mr. Johnston's big influences are The Beatles and Casper the Friendly Ghost. Daniel is also a cartoonist and I'll have some of his images available soon. This cut, "Held the Hand," is a short one off of his 1990 album on Shimmy Disc.
Material
I don't know enough about Material.... Every album is almost a complete departure from the previous one, most often featuring instrumental experimentation, with rock and funk influences and international sensibilities. This cut, "Soul Killer" is from the 1989 album Seven Souls. I chose it to satisfy my need to fertilize the planet with William S. Burroughs. The album features Mr. Burroughs reading his work.
Arvo Part
For three years now, I've hosted a show of contemporary composed music on WREK. Over that time, no composer has been more requested and appreciated by the listeners than Arvo Part. He's from Estonia, his themes are often liturgical and/or mystical, and the music is gorgeous. Be careful, though, because the levels on this cut vary quite a bit. It's entitled Silouans Song.
