Graphics, Visualisation, and Usability Center

Alex P. van Dam

Alexander Pieter van Dam is a student at the Department of Technical Mathematics and Informatics at the Delft University of Technology (TUD). There he is majoring in Computer Graphics, with interests in CAD/CAM, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality. Currently he is finishing his studies with an internship at the Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Center at the College of Computing of Georgia Tech . There he works on a project for the Medical Informatics Group of Norberto F. Ezquerra .

Current research project:

The project I am currently working on involves Interactive Region Of Interest Selection in 3D MRI- and PET-datasets. Using the scientific visualization package AVS, I am building a module which allows for browsing through the stack of slices to pick one to do a 2D ROI-selection, resulting in a user- defined boundary. Using region growing- and snake-algorithms I will try to convert this into a data-defined boundary, which can be used as a seed in the adjacent slices to find similar boundaries. This then results in a stack of bounded 2D regions of interest, that can be viewed as a small 3D volume, which can be volume rendered. Finally, if there is any time left I hope to explore the use of VR-tools in this project, e.g. manipulating this small 3D volume interactively using a 3D spaceball or dataglove and a Head Mounted Display.
