THE OPEN VIRTUAL ENRVIRONMENT
An Open Inventor mini-toolkit for Virtual Reality
The Open Virtual Environment is an Inventor-based object-oriented
mini-VR toolkit that is being used to support the
Virtual Venues Project.
Together, the toolkit's classes provide the necessary functionality
for doing user-centered virtual reality flythroughs.
So far the toolkit includes:
VRViewer & VRBaseViewer: viewer classes which combines features of the
Examiner and Constrained Viewers to better support both screen-based
VR and HMD/tracker-based VR.-
WaveClass: a geometry reader and converter class for importing
and optimizing Wavefront objects and material properties into Inventor.
-
VRTrackerClass: communicates with and reads position and orientation
information from four different types of 3D tracker serial devices
(the Polhemus fastrak and isotrak, Ascension Flock of Birds, and
the FakeSpace Boom tracker).
-
VRMenu: A motif menu panel which combines standard viewer features
with VR-specific features.
-
VRAnimation: A 3D Animation module for playing back hierarchies
of animated geometry objects (development not fully completed yet).
Here's a screenshot of an OVE Application window. Shown here is
a pole vaulter animation being played back by the VRAnimation module:
This next screenshot shows a section of the scrollable popup
interface from the VRMenu module:
