James Foley


GVU's founding Director, James Foley, left Georgia Tech in June 1996 to become Director of the Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab. At Georgia Tech, Dr. Foley was a Professor of Computer Science, Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Director of the Graphics, Visualization & Usability Center. Prior to Georgia Tech he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The George Washington University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His interests include user interfaces and interactive computer graphics; his current research focuses on building UIDE, the User Interface Design Environment. Recent research funding has been from NSF, NASA, Sun, and Siemens. He is co-author, with A. van Dam, of Fundamentals of Interactive Computer Graphics, and is also co-author, with van Dam, S. Feiner, and J. Hughes, of the recently-published Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice. Foley is a Fellow of the IEEE, holds memberships in ACM, IEEE, Human Factors Society, and Sigma Xi, and serves on the editorial boards of Computers and Graphics. He is Editor-in-Chief for ACM Transactions on Graphics.
