GVU Technical Report Number:
GIT-GVU-94-17
Title:
Using 'Working Model' to Introduce Design in a Freshman Engineering Course
Authors:
Kurt Gramoll
Abstract:
Over the last several years, numerous engineering schools have instituted new design courses for Freshman and Sophomores or modified existing courses to include a design component. If time and curriculum allows, it is generally best to institute a new Freshman design course or a series of courses that allows the content of the course to be centered on design from the conception of the course. Colorado School of Mines followed this philosophy and initiated a 11-hour design course that included both the Freshman and Sophomore. However, from a practical point of view, it is difficult to add new courses, expecially 11 hours worth, since other courses must be cut from the curriculum. Furthermore, serious design projects should wait until the senior year when students have the required knowledge to fully understand and appreciate design projects.
