This position is a technical position in the IT Department as part of the Career Path Process. Position is assigned to the Enterprise Data Management Group within Systems Engineering, reporting to Mike Chekal. 

Position will be filled at the Band B/C level (Project Engineer, Sr. Project Engineer, Assoc Systems Engineer or Systems Engineer) depending upon the successful candidate's skill set and experience. 

This position is responsible for developing analytical solutions in collaboration with Union Pacific Railroad business units to deliver competitive analytics. This position will focus on providing new business insight through the integration and analysis of internal and external data sources. These solutions will utilize the emerging "big data" technologies. This position will support the development of, and implementation of analytical solutions. 

Responsibilities will span the "discovery analysis" life cycle. 

Required experience/skill sets include: 

Experience using "big data" technologies and techniques to develop analytical solutions 

Experience with Hadoop and related technologies (Pig, Hive, Mahout, HBase, Sqoop) 

Experience developing in a Linux environment 

Experience developing with Java 

Experience researching and integrating diverse data sources 

Strong relational DB experience (Teradata, Netezza, Oracle, MS SQL Server) 

Strong communications skills (both oral and written) 

Desired Experience/Skill Sets include: 

Experience using structured, semi-structured and unstructured data 

Experience with NoSQL technologies 

Experience with data mining, discovery and exploration 

Experience with large RDBMS environments

  • Problem Solving: Must be able to solve problems where a precedent has been set. Must be able to understand and integrate solutions in a multi-systems environment, providing a seamless look to the customer. NOTE: This is a new technology offering, therefore, precedent may not yet exist.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • 3 year(s) experience in Information Technology including required experience/skill set noted in Basic Purpose of Position
