Job Description: This position will serve as a technology lead for highly innovative computing research involving the development and application of high performance and cloud computing systems by CERCS center. The candidate will work closely with faculty and graduate students using the research computing facilities, many from other disciplines, assessing their needs, and assuring that necessary technologies, expertise, training, and documentation are available to enable their use of the systems. An important component of the position involves close interactions with vendors and sponsors, performing evaluation of hardware and software components for use in research projects, and with end users and other professional staff. The position involves managing the acquisition, policy and deployment of machines and clusters. Sample job activities include: attending research group meetings; supporting system, network, and application software for distributed machine use and management; troubleshooting hardware and software; documenting services and facilities; ensuring users are following technology best practices. Supervision of other staff members as well as graduate and undergraduate assistants will be required.
Qualifications: BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related field; experience with Linux operating system distributions, including installation, configuration, writing shell scripts, building software, etc.; experience specifying, building, and troubleshooting modern computer systems; basic networking; and excellent written and oral communication skills with strong customer service focus. Ability to develop knowledge and skills with the following technologies: Openstack, Puppet, TCP/IP networking, Cisco IOS, network security, programming, scripting, advanced/novel interconnects (e.g. Infiniband). Previous work experience in a college/university environment is preferred.
