Working Smarter with PDAs

Students: Bob Amar

We believe a lot can be gained by making mobile devices capable of some basic sensing of the environment and the way they are currently being held or operated. Previous explorations of how augmenting PDAs with sensors for spatial orientation, touch, and proximity have provided the basis for new paradigms for use, such as automating elements of interaction that are naturally in the background (such as turning on a PDA or changing the screen orientation simply by turning the PDA) and providing new foreground gestures for tasks such as scrolling and recording voice memos. We are currently extending some of these explorations and investigating how these sensing capabilities may be used in application settings.
