Biography
Hi, my name is Henrique Wiermann Paques. I am from a not so small city in
Brazil, called Campinas, which is about 80 kilometers
(sorry, no miles :-) )
far from the city of Sao Paulo. My studies in computer science started
back in 1986, when I attended a Technical High School in Data Processing
called COTUCA located in my hometown.
I have a BS degree in Computer
Science from the University of Sao Paulo (USP-Sao Carlos), Brazil,
and a MS degree
also in Computer Science from the State University of Campinas
(UNICAMP), Brazil.
I started my studies toward a Ph.D. degree at the Oregon Graduate Institute, Portland, Oregon.
Currently, I am a Ph.D. candidate at the College
of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. My studies are sponsored by the
Brazilian government, through CAPES (Post-Graduate Federal Agency).
My main research interest in on dynamic query optimization
in open distributed systems. Processing and optimizing ad-hoc and
continual queries in an open environment with distributed, autonomous and
heterogeneous data servers (e.g., the Internet) poses several technical
challenges. One of them is how to guarantee that the query execution will
efficiently run in such dynamic environment, where data servers available
on-line are constantly changing in number, volume, content and
capability. Currently, I am investigating mechanisms that will
allow the adaptation of the query execution plan in the presence of
environment changes so that the query execution efficiency is
maintained. In the past, I have worked with object-oriented
analysis and design of distributed applications. I am one of
the main contributors to the AQR software.
