Ralph Earl
American, 1751-1801

Portrait of David Baldwin, 1790
Oil on canvas

Purchase in honor of Lawrence L. Gellerstedt, Jr., President
of the Board of Directors, 1984-1986, with funds from Alfred
Austell Thornton in memory of Leila Austell Thornton and
Albert Edward Thornton, Sr., and Sarah Miller Venable and
William Hoyt Venable, 1985.221

Choosing to dress as a country gentleman and pose
at his library desk for this portrait, David Baldwin
clearly wanted to communicate his prominent standing
as a Connecticut merchant and respected citizen.
