Ulysses Davis
American, 1913-1990

Untitled, ca. 1970s
Painted, carved wood sculpture

T. Marshall Hahn, Jr. Collection, 1996.31

Self-taught artist Ulysses Davis created an array of creatures that are both grotesque and humorous. This Janus figure is an exampleof his imaginative whimsies. Inspired by popular conceptions of African sculpture, it is at once a parody of and a tribute to African art and culture.
