Thank
you for your interest in the graduate programs in the College
of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. We
offer exciting programs with the goal of producing well-rounded
professionals in the broad discipline of Computing. New
students are admitted to our graduate programs only for
the Fall term. Applicants who apply for other semesters
will be declined.
Admission to the graduate programs is highly competitive.
The Admissions committee, in consultation with the entire
faculty of the College of Computing, selects for admission
from an outstanding pool those students whose intellectual
capacity, demonstrated abilities, and personal characteristics
best equip them for outstanding careers in computing.
Intellectual ability is one of the main admission criteria.
Evaluation of intellectual ability is based on undergraduate
grades, graduate work if any, and other evidence presented
by the applicant:
- Grade
Point Average (GPA). Typically the GPA of Ph.D.
applicants is 3.5/4.0 and is at least 3.0/4.0 for M.S.
applicants.
-
General
Record Examination (GREs).Scores from the general
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required. The
College of Computing will accept either paper or computer
based scores.
Recently, accepted applicant scores have averaged 80%,
90+%, 90+% respectively on the verbal, quantitative
and analytical sections for the PhD program and 80%
on the quantitative and analytical sections for the
M.S. program.
For the MS application, scores from the Computer
Science Subject Test are required
.
For the PhD application, scores from the Computer
Science Subject Test OR any other area
test are recommended, but not required.
-
Test
of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL
test is required for candidates whose native language
is not English and who have not studied in the United
States for at least one year. The required minimum is
600 (paper test) or 250 (computer test); however, most
candidates are well above this score.
-
Letters of Recommendation. The application requires
three recommendation letters from people closely acquainted
with the student about academic competence. Letters
from the academic community are preferred.
In general, there are many more qualified applicants than
there are places in the program. The challenge for the College
every year is to select a class from a very qualified pool.
The College looks for compelling reasons to admit candidates.
We welcome all pertinent information that would assist
us in making an objective and informed decision on your
admission.
The deadline for applying to the Ph.D. program is December
15. The deadline for applying to the M.S. C.S program is
March 1. All application materials should be mailed to Graduate
Admissions and must be received by the application deadline
to ensure adequate consideration of your application.
Note that our Master's (M.S.) program is separate from our
Ph.D. program. If the eventual degree you seek is a Ph.D.,
apply directly to the doctoral program. Ph.D. candidates
are typically offered a research or teaching assistantship
which includes a stipend and tuition remission. The Master's
program does not offer financial aid to the majority of
students. Aid will be based on qualifications for the program,
not need.
Apply on-line at the Graduate
Admissions Website. The College of Computing uses an
on-line application process. All necessary materials can
be accessed using the link above.
