Ph.D. Candidate Wins National Academies Fellowship

Valerie Summet, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science, has been awarded a Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship by the National Academies in Washington, D.C. Run out of the National Academies' Policy and Global Affairs Division, the program is designed to engage its fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy.

Accepted Students Spend Night on GT Campus

On March 7 and 8 the Office of Outreach, Enrollment and Community hosted 20 accepted Computer Science and Computational Media students for an on-campus overnight event.

CoC Student Organization Collaboration Event

March 8, 2010

On Monday, March 8, College of Computing student organization leaders met to talk collaboration and communication.  Representatives from 12 organizations discussed ways to increase the effectiveness of their events in serving the College’s undergraduates. Essentially the leaders got a chance to network and get to know other organizations, as well as work on possible future collaborative events. The meeting came at an important time, as all College organizations now are busily working on compiling schedules and budgets for next year.

College of Computing Programming Team

The College of Computing’s Programming Team competed on Feb. 17 in the Annual Spring Programming Contest, hosted by Mercer University in Macon, Ga. The College fielded four teams, placing 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th out of 29 teams.  Our first-place team was particularly successful, solving two more problems than the second place team.

SAB Trivia Night a Fun Way to Meet, Interact

Every month, Student Activities Board (SAB) hosts a night of trivia, open to all Georgia Tech students but focused on students of the College of Computing.  Teams are made upon arrival, which gives students the opportunity to meet and work with people they do not know. Trivia Night is a great way to meet fellow students in a casual, relaxed environment.

M@CC Study Sessions Focus on Group Learning

Every Thursday night, Minorities at the College of Computing (M@CC) hosts a study session dedicated to the academic support of their members. Consistently ranging from 10 to 20 members a week, M@CC study sessions encourage academic improvement, fellowship and friendship.  Members from all undergraduate years, as well as graduate students, attend.

On Thursday, March 4, more than 300 high school students, parents and teachers were on the Georgia Tech campus for “Cool Computing,” an event held to showcase all the “cool” things taking place in computing research, academics and industry.

Assistance with Threads Selection and CS/CM Career Preparation

The Intentional Advising Program is designed to assist students in Threads selection and CS/CM career preparation. The program offers a Spring seminar and/or individual sessions with your CS/CM Intentional Advisor (IA), ecollums [at] cc [dot] gatech [dot] edu (Beth Collums). Individual sessions begin with a discovery meeting during which you and your IA design a customized program to support you.

Georgia Tech Student Receives Astronaut Scholarship


Georgia Tech Junior Joy Buolamwini received a $10,000 scholarship from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

The very first Space Shuttle pilot, Robert Crippen, will present
Georgia Tech Junior Joy Buolamwini with a $10,000 scholarship from the
Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) during a public presentation and
ceremony, Friday, September 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, Georgia Tech Campus.

The award ceremony will coincide with a presentation by Crippen,
a four flight veteran, who has logged more than 565 hours in space, orbited the
earth 374 times and traveled more than 9.4 million miles. The lecture is free
and open to the public.
