If you played a lot of role-playing video games, you probably still remember some quests that annoyed you. Maybe the quest was too difficult, or simply pointless, as if the entire purpose were to prevent you from finishing too quickly. Unfortunately, you cannot change the game. Skipping a quest will leave a gap in the story, and makes the entire storyline incoherent.
Can you achieve customization and quality at the same time? This project aims to customize the game while preserving a high-quality storyline. Our technology allows you not only to play the quests you want, but play them within a coherent story. Based on player preferences, we can insert, remove and replace quests from the original story. A partial-order plan adaptation mechanism ensures the quests are causally sound, and players' actions have material effects on the game outcomes. The quests form an integral storyline rather than disconnected fragments. Furthermore, we preserve the original human-designed story as much as possible to maintain the original intentions of the story authors and story quality.
This technology can also support the customization of educational materials in a virtual learning environment.
