congratulations to ecl's own dr. jim rowan!

Congratulations to ECL member Jim Rowan, who graduated in December 2005. Jim defended his dissertation, Digital Family Portraits: Support for Aging in Place, in July and joined the Computer Science Department at the University of West Georgia as an Assistant Professor in this past Fall.

working towards everyday computing

We introduce a new area of interaction research, everyday computing, by focusing on scaling ubiquitous computing with respect to time. Our motivations for everyday computing stem from wanting to support the informal and unstructured activities typical of much of our everyday lives.

Our goal is understanding the transformation of everyday life as computing is ubiquitously integrated into informal, daily activities and routines.

Acumen mentioned by Slashdot

The Acumen project was kinda, sorta mentioned in this Slashdot article which reviewed the book Security and Usabilty. There is a chapter in the book that describes Acumen and the research ideas that it explores.

the ecl gets an rss feed

The ECL now has an RSS feed! Our feed contains items contributed by ECL lab members and lab alumni that relate to our lab's interests and vision. The feed is an experiment in group content creation and remixing. Please direct comments/questions about the feed to Jeremy. Enjoy!

More about RSS: Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a way for anyone (e.g. individuals, organizations, groups) to publish content so that it can be easily obtained, read, and repurposed. An RSS feed contains items of content; people can subscribe to a feed to automatically get new items in the feed.

RSS readers such as RSSOwl and Bloglines can help you manage feed subscriptions and read the items in the feeds. Also, if you're using Firefox, you can also create a Live Bookmark to the ECL RSS feed by clicking on this icon at the bottom right on Firefox's window: .
