Self-Built Laptop

MK286, the ultra modern slim-size laptop. Ten years ago, that was more true than today.

Access to the batteries without tools. One such battery pack lasted about 2 hours.

Only two screws need to be removed to access all parts in the main body of the laptop.

Keyboard removed, free access to the mainboard and some other PCBs. Note the white frame, into which the keyboard perfectly fits, so that the two screws make it stable.

Since I couldn't find a keyboard with these dimensions, I've built one from single keys...

The laptop is also extensible. Compatible with C64 modules, but the connector also supports a 16bit data bus for my own extensions, like a EPROM/GAL programmer.

Another two screws fix the cover for the LCD module. The LCD is carefully fixed with 4 screws and rubber since it was pretty expensive.

The mainboard! With ultrafast 80286 processor! Running at an unbelievable speed of 2MHz! The processor is plugged in upside down, because of an error in the data sheet. Really, it was wrong in the 286 book I got from the library ;-)

The lid is removed from the mechanics, that allow it to be opened and closed.

Welcome to the main menu of MK286. You can select a word processor (better: text editor), MKDOS, a subset of MSDOS, that works on a RAM-drive (256kB!), Tetris and some configuration stuff.

An even older project is this "portable computer". Powered by a C64 6510 microprocessor, and equipped with a C64 keyboard and a 2 line LCD.

The 6510 above was used together with 2 light barriers and this display (50 light bulbs!) as a speed display for cars.
