Hovering Around Georgia
I participated in this project during the 2007-2008 Academic Year. It involved developing a flash-based application to assist middle school students with running experiments and making explanations about the phenomena they experienced.
My contributions included creating many new software elements:
- The ability to retrieve the definition of a science term by mousing over
the word and to drag terms from a pool at the bottom of a journal page
and drop them to complete explanations.
- An area to test designs of hovercraft that can be created in real life and that cannot be (objects with massless bases) in order to uncover new phenomena.
- A chart where students can record their justifications for their design decisions. This can be used for hovercraft they will design in the software or for hovercraft they will build from real materials. The chart contains areas for a design decision, purpose, evidence, and science explanation.
During the summer of 2008, I transcribed and analyzed the data from the 21 two-hour sessions.
