Connect2Congress is a data gathering, processing, and interactive visualization tool for the analysis of congressional voting behaviors. Connect2Congress allows its operator to perform queries based on periods of interest, representative attributes, related news, congressional chamber, and political parties. We evaluated Connect2Congress trough two user studies. First, we conducted a focus group with a working prototype of the visualization and allowed participants to guide the queries and interpret the results. Second, we conducted a number of one-on-one interviews with political journalists. The main result of our evaluations is that Connect2Congress afforded novel types of analysis that yielded news leads and analytical results that served as novel and actionable insights to all the participants. I collaborated in the creation and evaluation of Connect2Congress between September 2009 and September 2010. I directed the work of master student Peter Kinnaird in collaboration with Gregory Abowd.
