From the Dean's Desk - April 9, 2020

Dear GT Computing colleagues,

Georgia Tech Dean of Computing Charles Isbell

I have more good news to share today. I am delighted to announce that two more of our colleagues have completed the faculty promotion process:

  • Rosa Arriaga, promoted to Principal Research Scientist. Dr. Arriaga is a developmental psychologist in the School of Interactive Computing and is also their Associate Chair of Graduate Affairs.
  • Carrie Bruce, promoted to Principal Research Scientist. In addition to her research work, Carrie is also the Research Director for the MS-HCI program.

Please join me in congratulating Rosa and Carrie on their accomplishments. Rosa and Carrie are our first Research Scientists promoted to Principal in well over a decade. We are proud of them, and of their contributions to our community.

On a more serious front, you probably saw yesterday that Georgia’s statewide shelter-in-place order has been extended to April 30. Please plan to stay away from campus if at all possible. If you must come in briefly, please be aware that parking is free everywhere on campus for the time being. The Institute does not want anyone to be forced onto public transit for lack of a parking space. You can find more information on the Institute’s coronavirus monitoring site.

Our chair searches continue to move forward, and I’d like to thank everyone who has participated. Please remember to fill out the online feedback form. I will read every single note of feedback, and I want to hear from as many of you as possible. The feedback forms for the School of Computer Science chair search will close Friday late, so please don’t forget to share your thoughts before then.

I would also like to let everyone know that there are a number of phishing emails and phishing texts(!) that purport to be me. The biggest hints that it is not me are: 1) the gmail email address and 2) the lack of unnecessarily long sentences. I guess the phishing attempts and the 50-odd messages asking me if it’s really me means I’ve finally arrived. I’m going to choose to feel good about this new milestone in my academic career and splurge on ice cream tonight.

Finally, don’t forget to check in regularly at our business continuity site. We continue to maintain the latest information on the College’s online operations there.

Peace.
