From the Dean's Desk - Feb. 9, 2021

Dear GT Computing community,

Georgia Tech Dean of Computing Charles Isbell

We’ve had a run of good news recently, and I am very happy to be able to share some of it with you from time to time.  Here’s some involving the School of Interactive Computing: Regents Professor John Stasko has agreed to serve as the interim chair for the School. John was actually the school’s founding Associate Chair, and we are lucky to have someone as interim with such deep institutional knowledge, as well as such a record of excellence. Please join me in welcoming John and thanking him for his service.

Also, please join me in thanking Rich Vuduc of CSE, who will lead the committee that will search for a new permanent chair for the school. Several of your colleagues have agreed to join him, and I will announce the complete complement later this week.

In other good news, two of our undergraduate students, Ryan Cobelli and Arvin Poddar, were part of a team that won first place at Hack Covid-19, a student hackathon organized by Tech and the Emory Global Health Institute. Their winning project, “Rotations,” generates schedules and seating layouts to help keep Covid in check in shared workspaces.

The Machine Learning Center has announced a new collaboration with Facebook to develop, fund, and co-teach machine learning classes for universities with a large population of Black and/or Hispanic students. This is a concrete step in our ongoing efforts to expand access to our field, and we should all be proud of their efforts.

There’s more to come, of course, because y’all keep doing amazing things. All of us are working from early in the morning to the midnight hour, but what else is new? I’m happy to see it, but do take a moment to take care of yourselves.  The spring is coming and while we’re waiting for it, remember to make room for a little peace of mind.
