From the Dean's Desk - June 23, 2020

Dear GT Computing colleagues,

Georgia Tech Dean of Computing Charles Isbell

As we move closer to the next phase of returning to campus, we need to gather information to plan for everyone’s safety. There are a lot of moving pieces and what we know is still changing, but the immediate  concern is that we protect our faculty and staff in higher-risk groups (as defined by the Georgia Department of Public Health).

If you fit that description, you may request an alternate work arrangement. Please be aware that you need to submit your request for an alternate work arrangement by July 6. The form is available on the HR website. Once you fill it out, please submit it to Employee Relations’ confidential Dropbox.

As we know more, you will know more.

In other news, I have a couple of kudos to share today.  Sasha Boldyreva (SCS) has received a Test of Time award from the Public Key Cryptography conference for her 2003 paper, “Threshold signatures, Multisignatures and Blind Signatures based on the Gap-Diffie-Hellman-Group signature scheme.” Her paper was one of only three to be recognized.

Frank Dellaert (SIC) also received an IEEE ICRA Milestone Award a couple of weeks ago for a 1999 paper that he co-authored titled, “Monte Carlo Localization for Mobile Robots.” The award recognizes the most influential ICRA paper published between 1998 and 2002.

Please join me in congratulating Sasha and Frank on their achievements and their important long-term impact. It one of the reasons we get in this business.

Finally, I encourage everyone to check out an online panel on machine learning and Covid-19 that our ML&GT group is presenting tomorrow at 11 am. Presenters include GT Computing faculty members Munmun de ChoudhuryIrfan EssaSrijan Kumar, and Aditya Prakash, ISYE faculty member Nicoleta Serban, and OMSCS student Kenneth Miller. The group will be talking about everything from digital tools for healthcare providers to tracking the psychological impact of the virus. You can learn more about the panel here, and register to attend here.
