From the Dean's Desk - May 1, 2020

Dear GT Computing colleagues,

Georgia Tech Dean of Computing Charles Isbell

I’m especially excited because today I have the honor of announcing the winner of this year’s Dean’s Award. This award is for someone who has made a singular contribution to the College, and for 2019-2020 that person is: Tonya Peoples, Director of Facilities and Planning.Today we celebrate many things, and I’m pretty excited about it!

In the past year, Tonya has overseen major moves that have affected nearly everyone in the College: the opening of Coda; the refitting of backfill space in Klaus and CCB; and the swap of personnel between the first and third floors of CCB, among many others. She not only dealt seamlessly with the logistical nightmare of it all, she also managed the culture challenges of moving people to new and unfamiliar spaces. Everyone’s job is harder than you think it is, and Tonya's is no exception, but this past year she and her team had to go well above and beyond, and pulled it all off flawlessly. Further, she has been a true representative of the College, acting as our ambassador, negotiator, and general again and again. She is known across campus as a consummate professional, and she is the epitome of our community spirit. Please join me in congratulating Tonya on her achievements.

On another celebratory note, the Institute is holding its online celebration of new graduates today at noon. You may watch the ceremony live at the Institute’s commencement site, or through the Institute’s Facebook page, where you may also leave comments for or chat with the graduates. If you’d like to post to social media, please use the Institute’s official hashtags so that the graduates can spot your messages: #gt20 and #ramblinon.

Finally, let’s all celebrate as we come to the end of the Great Long Semester, and look forward to the beginning of the next, this time with more sun. I’m proud of what we’ve done together. We’ve still got several more steps on our journey, and I’m happy we’re doing it together.

Enjoy the weekend. Stay safe.

Peace.
