From the Dean's Desk – May 15, 2020

Dear GT Computing colleagues,

Georgia Tech Dean of Computing Charles Isbell

A lot of big decisions that affect our lives still must be made, and those decisions will not be made only by us. We are still waiting for more information on Fall semester as well as on the safe return of staff, faculty, and students to campus. These decisions are being made in the larger context of the continued need for our growth even in a time of financial uncertainty.Although we’ve already started summer semester, today is the last day of the academic year. It’s a special day, so I want to start by congratulating everyone for making it through. We have all had to perform our work in a new way this spring, and I am very impressed by the patience and persistence of our CoC community.

Still, we can expect the summer term to be more straightforward than the term we just ended. We are still doing things in a new way, but we have at least a little experience under our belt. So, because we are a bit more settled, I am going to move away from daily e-mails from now. You should still expect to hear from me at least twice a week, and more if something pops up that you need to know (or I run across some summer music I can’t let slide by).

Here’s something that you definitely need to know: The College is holding online Dean’s New Alumni Celebrations next week. I encourage faculty and staff to log into the events and congratulate our graduates. The undergraduate ceremony will be held on Monday, May 18 at 2 pm, and you can join the event here. The graduate ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 19 at 2 pm, and you can join that event here. Let’s show our graduates how proud we are of their accomplishments.

In the meantime enjoy the weekend. Apparently along with all the other things we can expect, we can also expect the summer to be really, really hot if this weekend is any indication. Stay cool, and stay safe!
