An illustration of a future home environment

The sunset was beautiful. Joan waited until the last of the clouds had turned back to grey, and then said "computer, planetarium view." The buildings on the horizon slowly slid downwards as the display projected on her walls and ceiling adjusted it's orientation. These new images were beamed over from some transmitters out in the country where the sky was clear, unlike the sunset which was the view she might have seen outside her window had she been able to afford an apartment with a view.

Joan rose and began to clear the table. After glancing abound the kitchen, she wrinkled her nose and decided to clean up later. Instead, she sat down in front of the coffee table and examined the game in progress on the chess board. She moved a piece and then picked up a book and begun reading. About 10 minutes later, she heard the familiar voice of her brother saying "Hey Joan, just noticed your move. Want to play in real-time?" She looked up and found his image projected right above the armchair catty-corner to the loveseat she was sitting in. "Sure, that would be fun!! Joan heard a -swish- and looked down just in time to see her brother move a pawn.

(Joan) CO-workers are nice, but scattered all over the country. A couple of us play bridge every week, but we can't really do a potluck since it's hard to taste food from a screen."

(Brian) "Well, at least you con trade recipes, and if you make the food look pretty, they'll never know if you mess up the the taste" [he smiles]

(Joan) "True. Hey, check out this carving."

[Joan pushes a wooden carving against a bed of pins and the corresponding pins on display on her brother's coffee table are pushed into it's shape]

(Joan) "Go ahead, stand it upright. I got it from a kid at the shelter. He's got talent. I'm hoping to get him an internship with me at work next summer."

(Brian) "Neat. good luck. Hey - did you hear what that said? Mom must be logged in"

(Joan) "Nope, but it sounds like she's repeating it. Hi Mom.

(Computer as Mom) You got lucky- there's both of us here. Hi kids!

(Joan) "Computer, ? 'hugs mom' " Joan hears "Joan hugs mom, and shortly afterwards, "Brian hugs mom too." In a very old and wobbly voice

(Joan) "Hey Brian, what's with the old man voice?"

(Brian) "I'm feeling my years - my son just turned 20!"
