Welcome to Georgia Tech's Newton Developers page. It is maintained by the Future Computing Environments group. We're interested in the Newton as a platform for investigating mobile and ubiquitous computing.

This page includes summaries of projects developed or under development using the Newton, and a list of Newton development resources.

And if you browse on a Newton, yes, this page is Newton-friendly :-)

Projects

Cyberguide, by Gregory Abowd (abowd@cc.gatech.edu) and others
The Cyberguide project focuses on how portable computers can assist in exploring physical spaces and cyberspaces. The Cyberguide project has given birth to a family of prototypes that use location information to guide the user, either indoors or outdoors.

StuPad note-taker, by Khai Truong (khai@cc.gatech.edu)
Newton message pads will be used to provide students with a means to electronically take notes within a Classroom 2000 environment. The note taker will document what and when students write. Through a java applet this information will allow students to revisit the lecture with respect to their class notes alongside the lecture slides, the audio, and other streams captured by Classroom 2000.

Llamashare, by Mike Pinkerton (pinkerton@netscape.com)
Llamashare provides an infrastructure and real-world applications for seamless integration of mobile devices into a desktop environment. The infrastructure allows the mobile devices themselves to collaborate and share information with others.

UbiPlayer, by Daniel Salber (salber@cc.gatech.edu)
UbiPlayer is an MPEG Audio Layer 3 (MPEG3) player for the Newton. MPEG3 is an efficient compression format for CD-quality sound. UbiPlayer provides an ubiquitous and entirely memory-based sound-playing device, with no moving mechanical parts. Additionally, streaming MPEG3 will allow the Newton to play MPEG3 files over the network. We plan to use the MPEG3 player to let students review the audio of a lecture in the Classroom 2000 project. This project will use the XAudio MPEG3 library, which is currently being ported to the Newton.

WebScrapers, by Daniel Salber (salber@cc.gatech.edu)
WebScrapers is a suite of Newton applets which provide the user with information grabbed from the web and based on his/her location. For example, an applet retrieves Mapquest driving directions with the user current location (as set in user info) as the starting address.
