Footsteps (1/18/95)
I walk so silently, like a mouse across the shifting sand
My soles are wolves' pads and crushed velvet
Listen to me walking:

From the corner of my eye I catch the flare of skirt,
The neatly-tied auburn hair
And the click click click of heels on the sidewalk.
We're moving together, I like a haunting ghost
She marking the rhythm of her long long legs behind
Click click click click
I hear her so close
I can feel her arms reaching out to touch my shoulder, softly, gently
Her breath is on my neck and the scent of her hair reaches me
And her heels are marking the pace of my heart
Click click click click

(She's following me, you know)

Humming a nonchalant tune, I am a modern Orpheus
Don't look back, don't look back
And in the tune I can hear no rhythm --
In that moment, I am stricken with doubt like a forceful blow
I turned my head

And like Orpheus' lost bride
She was gone
