Eyewitness News Five

We interrupt this broadcast to bring you Eywitness News Team Five Special Report:

Spring Watch '96.

From Eywitness News Team Five central here are Chet Russel and Melanie Wood

Team Picture

Hi, I'm Chet Russel. As you know if you've looked out your window, Atlanta has been smothered by a torrent of unusually average spring weather.

That's right, Chet. And News Center Three will be here to cover all the weather for you. Let's start with Candi Doyle with the weather. Candi, how do you explain all this averageness?

Georgia Satellite

Well, Melanie, looking at the regional satellite picture you see a couple of ordinary clouds drifting aimlessly across the Metro area today. On the national map we see a weak low front, and a really confused front that doesn't know whether it's hot or cold. All this combined to give us average temperatures today. The five day outlook is more of the same. Back to you, Chet.

Thanks, Melanie. Lets go to Bob Williams who is at the Atrium of Hartsfield International airport to see how the the airlines are coping with all this normalcy. Bob?

Hartsfield Atrium

Thanks, Chet. As you can see behind me, the airport is pretty empty right now. Planes are flying out of here pretty regularly. Delta is a half an hour behind schedule, but that's not unusual. I want to stress, if you are coming out to the airport today, that all of the Northeastern airports are open, so there is no need to confirm your flight. Earlier, I talked to some of the people waiting for their flights.

"How long have you been waiting?"

"About, um, five minutes."

"And do you thank that is due to the unseasonably average weather?"

"No. Um, they just started boarding from the, you know, rear of the plane, and I'm sitting kinda towards the front."

"Back to you, Melanie"

Thanks, Bob. As Bob said, if you think the weather is average here, just look at what happened up north. New York was inundated with average weather today, as residents were just as rude and obnoxious to each other as always. Buffalo was blanketed with an ordinary spring day, as residents struggled to cope with a record 25th average day in a row.

Thanks, Melanie. Now let's go to our roving reporter Tina Fish, who's standing over I-75. What's the traffic like, Tina?

Atlanta Traffic

Well, Chet, traffic is running smoothly today, as Atlanta drivers are running about 70 miles per hour on streets that are not slick at all. If you look down at my feet, you'll see that the pavement here offers traction and good driving ability. The Department of Transportation is recommending that if you need anything at all today, driving is a pretty good way to get there, and you don't need to worry about road conditions, let alone anything silly like public transportation. The are expecting conditions to improve overnight, as the average weather contiues, and traffic volumes lower. Melanie?

Thanks Tina. Many Atlanta residents took advantage of the normal weather today. Our Greg Gagne was their to interview them. Greg?

Hi Melanie. I'm standing here in the parking lot of a strip mall, where Atlantans have flocked today in the course of their ordinary business. The grocery stores have reported no unusual sales of water and canned goods. I interviewed one resident.

"So, what have you been up to today"

"Oh well, just some stuff. My son needed a new pair of shoes, and I wanted to buy the new Wynonna album."

"You braved the normal weather for the Wynonna album?"

"Yeah, I'm not a real big fan or anything, but I kind of liked it, and it seemed like an OK day to buy a Wynonna album?"

"Interesting. Back to you, Chet."

Finally today, we have a list of school closings. All the schools in the metro area are closed tomorrow. Of course, that is because tomorrow is Saturday. On behalf of Melanie Wood and the entire Eyewitness News team, thank you for joining us. We hope you'll be back in an hour as our coverage of this historic weather pattern continues. G'Night.
