Adire Cloth
Cotton, indigo

Yoruba, Nigeria, 20th century

Fred and Rita Richman Collection, 1983.87

This cloth was made by the Yoruba people of
Nigeria. The blue color comes from dye made
from the indigo plant, and the white patterns
were made using a cassave-paste resist. The
pattern is said to mean "Ibadan is a happy
place," referring to the Nigerian city.
