Elevator Grille
Bronze-plated cast iron

Louis Sullivan (1856-1924)
Chicago, IL, ca. 1893-1894

Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, 1982.291

The overall pattern in this elevator door represents
seed and plant forms that Louis Sullivan used as a
key decorative element. These motifs were especially
appropriate for Sullivan's Chicago Stock Exchange
building, a Midwestern agricultural marketplace.
