Mantel Clock
Brass, silver

Attributed to Dubuc (working 1780-1819),
Paris, France, 1800-19

Purchase in honor of Colleen Callahan, President
of the Members Guild, 1988-89, with funds from
the Decorative Arts Endowment, 1988.86

This clock, made in Paris for the American market,
honors George Washington. The "father of his
country" assumed mythic dimension in the early
years of the new republic and here the French
use his image to appeal to Americans.
