In the 1972 uprising at the New York prison at
Attica, 1,200 inmates seized control and took
fifty hostages in protest of their living conditions
and restrictions on the practice of political and
religious beliefs. After four days, state police
stormed the facility. Ten hostages and thirty-two
prisoners were killed. This figure's upraised fist
mimics the gesture the prisoners used as a symbol
of their definance.
