The title of this work refers to the song "Strange Fruit,"
recorded by Billie Holiday in 1956, which describes a
lynching in the South. Made from refuse found on the
streets near Hammons's Harlem studio, this tree has
grown tell despite its humble origins. It bears fruit in
the form of political buttons featuring black leaders.
