Armchair
Ebony, marquetry of ivory,
mother-of-pearl, lighter woods,
red pine

Probably New York City, ca. 1875

Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection,
1983.196

Robert Lenox, the original owner
of this chair, was a noted book
collector and donor to the New
York Public Library. His coat of
arms, worked into the complex
marquetry, perhaps reflected his
ambition to be a nineteenth-century
Medici, a powerful patron of arts
and letters.
