Century Vase
Porcelain, gilt decoration

Designed by Karl L. Muller (1820-1887),
Union Porcelain Works (1863-ca.1922)
Greenpoint (Brooklyn), New York, 1876

Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, 1986.163

This object was displayed at the Centennial Exposition
in Philadelphia in 1876, which celebrated America's
hundredth birthday. Bison heads and portraits of George
Washington decorated the vase. Sculptural scenes - the
Boston Tea Party and William Penn's Treaty with the
Indians - as well as painted views - Robert Fulton's
steamboat and the telegraph pole - hail American
events and inventions.
