Figural Jug
Ash-glazed stoneware

John Lehman (born 1825 in
Germany), working ca. 1860-mid 1880s,
Randall Mill, Randolph County,
Alabama, 1860
Purchase with funds from the
Decorative Arts Endowment, 1994.19

This beautifully modeled jug, created in
Alabama by a German-born craftsman,
incorporates a sort of logo-portrait of a
character presumably associated with
the product inside. It depicts an African-
American male wearing a stocking cap,
earrings, a tie, and a ruffled shirt. The
artist has impressed his name on the
buttons of the coat. The raised rectangle
at the base was intended to hold a label
of the contents.
