The son of former slaves, William Edmondson
worked as a hospital janitor until the early 1930s,
when a vision directed him to become a stone carver,
using material salvaged from demolished buildings,
he carved hundreds of tombstones, graveyard mem-
orials, and portraits of historical, biblical, and every-
day characters.
