Pier Table and Etagere
Rosewood, poplar, mirror

Attributed to Alexander Roux (1813-1886)
New York City, 1980-1857

Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection, 1981.1000.66

An etagere is a piece of furniture with open
shelves for displaying small decorative objects.
The mirror reflected the life of the family and
their guests in the parlor, the most public room
in a private residence. In this section, we have
selected objects that raise questions about how
we see ourselves and how artists see themselves
and others.
