Cemetary Gate
Cast iron

James Monahan, Savannah,
Georgia, ca. 1850

Purchase with funds from the Decorative Arts
Acquisition Trust, 1983.48

A celestial harp with a winged hourglass, a symbol
of mortality, and the flanking, inverted torches,
which represent death, suggest that this gate was
originally used in a family or private cemetery.
