in a photo-essay on contemporary writers pub-
lished in LIFE in April 1981. It is a remarkably
unsentimental examination of the aging writer
and shows Annie Liebovitz’s ability to portray
intimate, rarely seen moments in the lives of
the celebrities she photographs.
