Sally Mann
American, born 1951

Sunday Funnies, 1991
Gelatin silver print

Purchase with funds from Lucinda W. Bunnen
for the Bunnen Collection, 1995.179

Sally Mann's photographs of her three children
probe the struggles of childhood and the conflicts
between children's dependence and their desire for
autonomy, between their innocence and knowledge.
Because of this powerful subject matter and the
occasional nudity of the children, Mann's images
have been considered controversial by some, while
others have seen them as profound explorations of
maternal love.
