Throughout the 19^th century, Europeans were
fascinated by the people and cultures of the Near
East and North Africa-particularly their exotic
dress and customs. Of special interest was the
nomadic existence of Arabs, whose mass migrations
were dictated by seasonal changes. In this colorful
and busy scene, a caravan crosses a river on its
journey to the fertile pastures of the Tell located in
the present day country of Algeria in North Africa.
