Roger Brown
American, born 1941

Dawn, 1980
Oil on canvas

Purchase with funds from the National Endowment
for the Arts and the Members Guild, 1980.78

Roger Brown combines narrative with stylized
forms and rhythmic patterns. The artist's use of
symmetry and repetition seems to neutralize his
subjects, which often depict disasters such as earth-
quakes and explosions. With this in mind, Dawn's
life-giving sun assumes ominous connotations.
