Background and Mission:

In response to the rapid growth in high performance computing (HPC) at Georgia Tech, Provost Chameau recently convened a task force to develop a strategy to guide our future development and to make recommendations about our path forward in supercomputing. Provost Chameau describes the unique challenges facing Georgia Tech:

"We have all been amazed at the recent rapid growth in high performance computing (HPC) at Georgia Tech. In the short span of 18 months we will have acquired and deployed more than 20 Teraflops of computing power in support of disciplinary sciences, engineering, and computational science. This has moved us to among the top 30 HPC venues in the world. With the addition of National Light Rail, dedicated connectivity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and on-campus networks, we have become a regional and national destination for researchers who use leadership-class computers. This unprecedented growth will only accelerate. With the addition of so many new facilities, the rapid advance of computing technology and the growing financial commitment needed to power, cool, operate, maintain, evolve, and secure these new computers, I believe it is time for an overarching campus strategy to guide our future development."

The Task Force, chaired by Rich DeMillo, Dean of the College of Computing, is charged with the mission to make recommendations in three areas including technology roadmaps, implementation, and governance.
