Due August 26 CS 4460 - Intro. to Information Visualization Fall 2014

Homework 1: Find and Critique an Interesting Visualization

Find a visualization of data from a domain that is of interest to you (health, politics, finance, economics, world demographics, sports, etc). The visualization can be a static information presentation (infographic) or an interactive information visualization. Additionally, write a one-page (a few paragraphs) review of the visualization that discusses:
  1. What message(s) the visualization is intend to convey.
  2. A critique of the visualization -- both pros and cons -- ways in which the visualization does a good job, ways in which it could be improved.

You should turn in an image of the visualization and cite where it is from (website URL, book, magazine, etc.) along with your review of the visualization per the guidelines above.

IMPORTANT: Turn in two copies of your assignment. Unless told otherwise, please do this for all your assignments this term. Emailing the assignment will not be accepted (we get enough email already). You must turn in hardcopy.

Grading: We will reward interesting and engaging visualizations that are identified, especially if they are new to Prof. Stasko. We will reward a thoughtful critique that addresses both positive and negative points of the visualization.
