Acknowledgments

During my long stay in the United States, I met a lot of new friends. Leaving them again so soon after just starting to know them was hard. Knowing that I have friends in the States will make it harder for me to decide where I want to go. On both sides of the ocean there is now a part of my life, which side to choose. If everything works out I will try my luck in the States and see what life is really like there.

Trying to thank everybody will probably not work. I will always forget people. I will try, however, to thank them all. If I forget somebody please forgive me, I thank you as well.

To start, I have to thank Larry. He made it possible for me to get to the States. He got me really infected with the virtual virus. I had a great time working with you. Thanks for showing me what is possible and giving me the opportunity to come over.

I also have to thank Joan. She was our guardian angel. She helped us out and showed us the best places to go to. She even showed us what thanksgiving is. It was great. Thanks for all the time you devoted to us and thanks for letting me come by and steal your candy.

Thank you Jim Foley for giving me the opportunity to work in a great lab. You really got this place humming. Thanks for letting me come over and taste the fruits of this lab. It was delicious, I want more.

Thank you virtual environments group for letting me come by and play with your toys. I had fun. Especially thank you Tom, Drew and E.J. for showing me all the goodies and for letting me play with them.

Jim Pitkow, thanks for taking my mind off off virtual reality and showing me the World Wide Web. You made me loose a couple of weeks, walking and playing with the Web. Now I know why it is called a web. Once it catches you, it will not let you go easily.

All of the animation crew, thank you for letting me use your equipment. I had great fun playing with it all. Thank you Wayne for patiently explaining it all to me. Thanks for letting me play with it all. Thank you Heather for taking my mind off the GVU and pointing it to the fun side of it all.

James thanks, for showing me the water and all your other projects. It was fun so see you play so happily. Thank you Rakesh. It was a honor to meet you, good luck with your thesis.

Thank you Dan Opdyke, Barbara Rothbaum, for letting me participate in that wonderful experiment. I learned a lot, not only about computers but much more about human beings.

Randy, Susan, Peter and the rest of the technical staff, thank you for not complaining when I came by again and again. You answered all my questions and I had great fun talking to you, and keeping you away from your work.

Thank you all of the other GVU people, Debbie, Don, Ammo, Liz, David, Beth, Keith, Ian and Hendrik. There are so many of them walking around in the lab, I already know I'm going to forget a lot them, that is why I just want to say: "Thank you all, for letting me walk around in the lab".

Thanks to all the Dutch people around the world. I had fun talking to you all. I had great fun in Atlanta, thanks to all the other Dutchman walking and living around the house. We ought to grab a beer together sometime.

In Delft I had a great advisor walking around, thank you Hans. It was fun working with you, sometimes maybe a little to much fun. Good luck with your own work. Thank you Charles. You were the one who got it all started, through you I made it to the States. Thanks.

Thank you Mom, Dad, Sis for supporting my stay in the States, and sending me little packages. You even kept on sending me stuff, even when it seemed I must have forgotten all about you. I missed you.

Finally, I want to thank Robin. She checked my thesis. she taught me new words and the real meaning of them (procrastinating is still a beautiful word. Start the club tomorrow?). Thanks for taking my mind of all the work I still had to do, thanks for showing me around in NY, thanks for being there.

Thank you all, all my friends on both sides of the ocean. Thank you for supporting me, helping me and distracting me, when I was working on my thesis. Thank you all.
