The City Seen

Artists have long been draw to the city’s vitality, excitement, and images of growth and progress, as well as to the less illustrious scenes of poverty, urban density, and human deprivation. In opposition to the landscape, where the forces of nature give perspective to our human achievement. In this section of our installation, artists portray the urban environment.  Since Atlanta has become a leading American city at the close of the twentieth century, it is useful to observe how other
cities, and even the idea of the city, have been depicted  through various cultures and at a range of times.

"The City Seen" looks at a number of works which depict this symbol of human industry. Photographs, paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts capture cityscapes from Atlanta and around the world, celebrating architectural achievement, reveling in urban drama and, in some cases, revealing the painful truths of human poverty and depravation.
