To escape the ravages of war and a highly technological society, a group of colonists left to claim a new world, called Pern. The planet was lush and beautiful, and also out of the way of most of the colonized galaxy with resources scarce enough to not attract pirates. But the planet hid a deadly secret, a ravenous, "living" rain which fell from the skies and devoured everything it touched. There were only two things that stopped the "Thread"... fire and water.

One of the native animals to the planet was a small flying lizard-like creature that possessed some unusual abilities. First they could "breathe" fire... and secondly they could instantly teleport away from danger! The colonists had an ally intheir fight against the thread, but they needed something much bigger...

And so through a science lost in the mist of Pernese time, the myth of dragons was reborn in flesh and blood... and a breed apart from the other colonists was also formed: The DragonRiders of Pern.
